Sarah’s News Roundup 01.20.18

 Larry Nassar
Almost 100 survivors who were sexually abused by Larry Nassar, USA Gymnastics team doctor, testified in court at his sentencing hearings.

They spoke courageously about the abuse and the impact it had on their lives.

Nassar pleaded guilty to charges of criminal sexual conduct and child pornography.

More than 150 women accused him of sexual abuse – for many of them the abuse started when they were children and carried on for years.

Steven Seagal
Actor and producer Steven Seagal has denied sexually assaulting Bond girl, Rachel Grant, in 2002.

He also denied attempting to expose himself to her.

Ms Grant spoke out because she wanted to end the culture of questioning why survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment only share their stories years after it happened: “I want people to know that it actually makes more sense for people to talk about it a long time after it happens – you get over it and then you can talk about it.”

Aziz Ansari
Aziz Ansari responded to an allegation of sexual assault by saying he believed the encounter to be “completely consensual”.

Babe magazine published a detailed account from a woman called Grace (not her real name) who described unwanted sexual activities when she was on a date with Ansari.

After she managed to get away she sent him a text explaining how she felt.

Grace also said that it took a long time for her to “validate this as a sexual assault”.

Chrissie Chambers
US YouTube personality Chrissie Chambers was awarded damages by the UK High Court after a British ex-boyfriend put videos of them having sex on the internet.

She has become a leading “revenge porn” campaigner and after the judgment said: “this should serve as a severe warning to those who seek to extort and harm with revenge porn: you cannot do this with impunity, and you will be held accountable for your actions. To every victim to this insidious kind of attack, I am here to say: you can fight back, and win. You will heal and move on – and you will not have to take those steps alone.”

Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of Woody Allen
Dylan Farrow, the adopted daughter of Woody Allen, has given an interview to CBS in which she talks about her sexual assault case against him.

She has repeatedly claimed that he molested her when she was seven but Allen repeatedly denied her claims.

Ms Farrow said: “All I can do is speak my truth and hope – hope that somebody will believe me rather than just hearing.”

Michael Douglas
Michael Douglas has been accused of sexually harassing former employee, Susan Braudy, 30 years ago.

Ms Braudy claims he used sexual language in front of her, made comments about her body and masturbated at her during a script meeting: “I realised he thought he could do anything he wanted because he was so much more powerful than I was.”

Douglas denies the allegations which came just over a week after he issued a pre-emptive denial of the claims.

Trump March for Life
Trump addressed the 45th annual March For Life via videolink from the White House Rose Garden, the first president to do so.

He used the speech to announce plans to give “conscience protections” to medical providers who refuse to treat patients or take part in procedures on religious grounds and vowed that his administration would continue to promote pro-life policies: “We are with you all the way.”

Civil rights campaigners, including Louise Melling from ACLU, have already raised concerns: “Religious liberty doesn’t include a right to be exempt from laws protecting our health or barring discrimination. It doesn’t mean a right to refuse to transport a patient in need because she had an abortion…Medical standards, not religious belief, should guide medical care.”

DIY Rules for a WTF World
Finally, I’m so excited to announce that Krista Suh’s first book and MILCK’s first EP both came out this week!

Reading Krista’s book, DIY Rules for a WTF World, is a lot like having Krista right there with you, just in book form!

Her positivity, warmth, creativity, insight and utter joy leap out from the pages and I found myself both wanting to finish reading it as quickly as possible and wanting it to last forever.

I’ve learned so much about myself from the first reading (including that I can be both a horse and a goat) and I’m certain that I’m going to be dipping in and out of this book for the rest of my life!

Milck
I’ve been looking forward to MILCK’s EP, This Is Not The End, coming out for what feels like years and it’s even better than I hoped it would be.

The incredibly talented musician, aka Connie Lim, shared: “There are 7 songs on the EP and each one is a special part of me that I’ve spent much time excavating. This EP is me turning my pain into power and believing that with full hearts we achieve our dreams.”
