Sarah’s News Roundup 12.30.17

Scott Fricker and his wife, Buckley Kuhn-Fricker
A 17-year-old was charged with two counts of murder for fatally shooting his girlfriend’s parents.

They had tried to stop their daughter dating him due to his neo-Nazi and white supremacist views.

Scott Fricker and his wife, Buckley Kuhn-Fricker, were killed early in the morning at their home in Reston, Va when they found the boyfriend in their daughter’s room.

After he shot the parents he shot himself.

He is in a critical condition in hospital and under police guard. His name is being withheld because he is a minor.

James White and Justin Mann
James White and Justin Mann have been charged with the murder of Shanta Myers, her 11-year-old son, Jeremiah, her 5-year-old daughter, Shanise, and her girlfriend, Brandi Mells.

The family had been found bound and with their throats slit in their Albany home the day after Christmas.

Police have referred to the quadruple murder as “savagery” and have said a preliminary investigation of the crime scene suggest the victims were targeted.

Michael Scott Wilson
Michael Scott Wilson was arrested for rigging the front door of his estranged pregnant wife’s home in an attempt to electrocute her.

He has been charged with attempted aggravated battery on a pregnant woman and grand theft of a firearm.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said: “This is one of the most bizarre domestic violence cases I have seen in my career. Not only did this man plan to electrocute his wife, but he could have injured a deputy, or any person attempting to enter this residence.”

His wife did not touch the door and is therefore unharmed by the incident.

Charles Dutoit
Conductor Charles Dutoit has been accused of sexual assault by opera singer Paula Rasmussen and three other women.

Ms Rasmussen described how as a 25-year-old singer at the LA Opera in 1991 Dutoit asked her to go to his dressing room even though a longtime soprano had warned her to be careful around the conductor.

When she got up to leave, Dutoit was behind her: “And I turned around, he pushed me against the door, grabbed my hand, shoved it down his pants and shoved his tongue down my throat. I was stunned. I was just sort of frozen.”

A knock on the door meant Ms Rasmussen was able to leave.

A stage manager saw her looking shocked and asked her “do you want to report this?”

She said no.

Unsurprisingly Dutoit denies all the allegations; however the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, and the Philadelphia Orchestra Association have all taken steps to end their association with Dutoit.

Paula Rasmussen said she “never planned” to go public but in the midst of the #metoo movement she feels differently about speaking up: “when someone asks me point-blank about what happened, I don’t see why I should not speak the truth.”

Shane Smith and Suroosh Alvi
Shane Smith and Suroosh Alvi, co-founders of Vice Media, have apologised for allowing a “boy’s club” atmosphere that included sexual harassment to flourish.

They released a statement after the New York Times published a story outlining four settlements by the company involving allegations of sexual harassment or defamation against Vice employees.

The newspaper also reported that over 20 female employees had experienced or witnessed sexual misconduct.

In the statement Smith and Alvi laid out steps the company is taking to improve the work atmosphere for women.

They have also committed to equal pay for men and women by the end of 2018.

Hillary Clinton
I’m going to finish the last roundup of 2017 with three snippets that give me hope for 2018.

Firstly, Hillary Clinton has been named the most admired woman for the 16th consecutive year.

Secondly, the incredibly talented musician MILCK (aka Connie Lim) who wrote Quiet, the song that went viral after the Women’s March, and who has done the most amazing things since then has made it onto the Badass Women of 2017 list.

And, everyone who shared their #metoo also made the list.

Finally, “feminism” is Webster’s word of the year.

I hope everyone has a great New Year!
