University of Southern California President Max Nikias has resigned amid criticism of the way he handled allegations of sexual abuse against former campus doctor George Tyndall.

His resignation comes less than a week after at least 600 faculty members signed a letter urging him to quit before classes begin this month.

Nikias will “continue to assist with the transition of the incoming president” in the role of president emeritus and USC trustee and alumna Wanda Austin has been named interim president until the replacement is found.

Tyndall has been accused of multiple “grossly improper pelvic exams that involved improper probing, at times without gloves, sexually charged remarks and illicit photographing of genitalia.”

The leaders of Willow Creek, one of the biggest megachurches in the US, have resigned over allegations of sexual misconduct against its founder Bill Hybels.

Hybels stepped down in April when the allegations first emerged although he denied any wrongdoing.

The elders said the church needed a “new start” and that they should have handled the allegations better.

Willow Creek has appointed a new lead pastor and has promised an independent review of its governance.

Matthew Newton, who was named director of Jessica Chastain’s new film Eve, has stepped down amid criticism surrounding a string of allegations of domestic abuse against him between 2007 and 2012.

When he announced he was stepping down he said he was “profoundly aware that I have a responsibility to lead where I have failed in the past. I can never undo the harm that I’ve caused the people I’ve cared about and I carry that shame and responsibility every day.”

Jessica Chastain has been one of the leading supporters of the #TimesUp movement.

She has not commented on Newton’s decision.

Actor Casey Affleck has apologised for the “unprofessional environment” on the set of his 2010 film I’m Still Here.

Affleck was sued by female crew members Amanda White and Magdalena Gorka who accused him of sexual harassment while working on the film, alleging they were repeatedly subjected to sexual innuendos and unwanted advances.

Affleck denied the allegations and the lawsuits were settled out of court.

This year he pulled out of a presenting role at the Oscars saying it was “the right thing do”.
