Sarah’s News Roundup 02.24.18

This year's Baftas were dominated by the Time's Up and metoo movements.
This year’s Baftas were dominated by the Time’s Up and #metoo movements.

Many actors wore black in solidarity with those standing against sexual harassment and abuse in the film industry.

Many also wore Time’s Up pins.

Nearly 200 female stars signed an open letter calling for an end to sexual harassment in the workplace.

The letter concluded: “If you have said ‘time’s up’, if the stories you have read in the papers have resonated and distressed you – join us in shifting the dial. Let’s make 2018 the year that time was up on sexual harassment and abuse. This is your moment too.”

Matthew Falder, a “warped and sadistic” paedophile, has been jailed in the UK for 32 years.

The Cambridge graduate who blackmailed victims and shared images of child sexual abuse on the dark web admitted to 137 charges against 46 people.

This case is the National Crime Agency’s first successful “hurtcore” prosecution.

Hurtcore relates to hidden forums on the dark web dedicated to share images and videos of rape, murder, sadism, torture, paediphilia, blackmail, humiliation and degradation.

Haiti has suspended Oxfam from operating in the country amid ongoing reports of sexual misconduct.

Oxfam representatives met with Haitian government officials and committed to cooperate with their investigation.

The charity also apologised for the prostitution scandal.

Former Chief Executive of Save the Children, Justin Forsyth, has resigned from UNICEF, saying he doesn’t want media coverage of his past to “damage” the charity.

Forsyth received 3 complaints of inappropriate behaviour towards female staff while he was working there.

He said he apologised at the time and “they (the complaints) were dealt with through a proper process many years ago.”

A former employee at Save the Children said staff were aware of Forsyth’s behaviour but were afraid of the consequences of speaking out.

Finally, I’m delighted to tell you guys about Krista Suh’s latest project – the Evil Eye Glove.

Krista had a dream in which there was a protest, a huge peaceful crowd with their hands outstretched toward the sky and each palm had a huge eye drawn on it.

Since then she has been hanging onto her vision of a Sea of Eyes, knowing that the image meant something and waiting for the right time to go public.

When she was invited to the March for our Lives, a march organised by survivors of the Florida School shooting, she knew that time had come.

If anybody wants details on how to get involved with either knitting or wearing the gloves, please check out Krista’s website.

I love her idea of a Sea of Eyes looking towards the White House the day of the March.

“Congress needs to know that the people are watching.”
