Larry Nassar, ex-USA Gymnastics doctor, was sentenced to a further 40-125 years bringing his total sentence for sexually abusing at least 265 girls in his care to 300 yearsLarry Nassar, ex-USA Gymnastics doctor, was sentenced to a further 40-125 years bringing his total sentence for sexually abusing at least 265 girls in his care to 300 years.

In court he gave this apology: “It’s impossible to convey the depth and breadth of how sorry I am to each and every one involved. The visions of your testimony will forever be present in my thoughts.”

Sentencing Judge Janice Cunningham dismissed his statement saying: “I am not convinced that you truly understand that what you did was wrong, and the devastating impact that you have had on the victims, their families and friends. Clearly you are in denial. You don’t get it.”

She went on to say that while this ends Nassar’s criminal legal proceedings “it does not end the emotional and physical suffering he has caused.”

Jill Messick
Jill Messick, Hollywood producer and former manager of Rose McGowan, has died by suicide.

Ms Messick was representing the actress when she alleged she was raped by Harvey Weinstein in 1997.

Ms McGowan also claimed that she was not supported by her management when the alleged sexual assault took place.

Jill Messick’s family have said that she was used as “collateral damage” in the Weinstein case and was “victimised”.

They added that she had chosen to stay out of the spotlight and “opted not to add to the feeding frenzy, allowing her name and her reputation to be sullied despite having done nothing wrong.”

Weinstein denies all wrongdoing.

Quentin Tarantino defending Roman Polankski's sexual assault
A 2003 radio interview has emerged of Quentin Tarantino defending Roman Polankski’s sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in 1977, saying that rape was a “buzzword” that didn’t apply to the situation: “He had sex with a minor. That’s not rape. To me, when you use the word rape, you’re talking about violent, throwing them down – it’s like one of the most violent crimes in the world…she wanted to have sex! Dated the guy!”

Uma Thurman has accused Harvey Weinstein
Uma Thurman has accused Harvey Weinstein of grooming her and of sexual assault.

She detailed an incident at the Savoy Hotel in London where Weinstein attempted to force himself on her and expose himself to her.

Ms Thurman described her reaction on that occasion as “like an animal wriggling away, like a lizard” as she tried to get away from him.

In another hotel in Paris he instructed her to go into a steam room with him.

Weinstein denies all wrongdoing.

Rob Porter resigned
White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned amid allegations of domestic violence from his two ex-wives.

Colbie Holderness and Jennifer Willoughby both spoke of experiencing physical and emotional abuse during their marriages to him.

Porter denied it: “these outrageous allegations are simply false” but made the decision to leave his job.

Later in the week Trump praised his work, wished him well and said: “He also, as you probably know, says he’s innocent and I think you have to remember that.”

Trump's speech writer David Sorensen
Trump’s speech writer David Sorensen also resigned following allegations of domestic violence from his ex-wife.

Jessica Corbett accused him of being physically and emotionally abusive and said he drove a car over her foot, threw her against a wall and put out a cigarette on her hand.

Sorensen said he had “never committed violence of any kind against any woman in my entire life” and claimed it was he who had been physically abused.

Trump attacking the entire #metoo movement
This week ended with Trump attacking the entire #metoo movement, tweeting: “People’s lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused – life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?”

It feels really important to state here that survivors do NOT make up allegations of sexual/emotional/physical/domestic/financial/psychological or any other sort of violence and/or abuse.

It is our lives that are shattered and although recovery is possible our lives/careers often turn out very differently to how we imagined them before the assaults/abuse happened.
