A record 117 women won elections across the United States
A record 117 women won elections across the United States during the midterms on November 6th, leading to the Democrats taking back the House of Representatives.

42 of them are women of color and at least 3 identify as LGBTQ.

The first Muslim, Native American, Latina and Refugee women have also been elected.

100 women are Democrats, 17 are Republicans and there are now 23 women in the Senate.

The so-called Year of the Woman is living up to its name, although women are far from having equal representation as when the 116th Congress is sworn in next year only 1 in 5 members will be women.

Trump has demeaned three black female reporters in three days.

The women – Abby Phillip, April Ryan and Yamiche Alcindor – earned his contempt just for doing their job.

Trump called one of Ms Phillip’s questions “stupid”, described Ms Ryan as “a loser” and brushed off Ms Alcindor saying her question was “racist”.

Sarah Glover, President of the National Association of Black Journalists, called Trump’s comments “appalling and irresponsible”: “The most powerful man in the free world is verbally abusing journalists. Donald Trump’s comments this week have reached an all-time low with attacks on three black female journalists.”

Colorado man Chris Watts has pleaded guilty to murdering his pregnant wife and two daughters.

Shanann Watts, who was 15 weeks pregnant, and their 3 and 4-year old daughters were reported missing in August.

Less than 24 hours after talking to the media, Watts was formally charged with murder, tampering with deceased bodies and unlawful termination of a pregnancy.

District Attorney Michael Rourke agreed to drop the death penalty in exchange for Watts accepting all nine charges against him as part of a plea bargain.

He now faces three consecutive life terms.

A US Marine Corps veteran with mental health issues shot dead 12 people, including a police officer, in a bar in Thousand Oaks.

28-year-old Ian David Long is believed to have had PTSD.

Long forced his way into the bar where a country music event attended by over 200 students was underway, set off a smoke grenade and then opened fire, before turning the gun on himself.

Sergeant Ron Helus was shot several times and later died in hospital.

The professional firearms instructor had been a policemen for 29 years and was due to retire next year.
