Brett Kavanaugh
Following on from the Senate confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, a ceremonial swearing-in was staged for him at the White House.

In front of the packed East Room Trump said: “On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure. Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception.

What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process. Our country, a man or woman must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

And with that, I must state that you, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent. Thank you. You were.”

Trump was wrong.

Kavanaugh was found neither guilty nor innocent of the allegations brought by Dr Christine Blasey Ford.

Since then Trump has repeatedly claimed that Kavanaugh’s Supreme Count nomination was “caught up in a hoax set up by the Democrats” and that “evil” people put Kavanaugh in a “disgraceful situation” during his confirmation process: “The things they said about him, I don’t even think he ever heard of the words. It was all made up. It was fabricated and it’s a disgrace.”

“I thought that the way they conducted themselves, the way they dealt with a high-level, brilliant – going to be a great justice of the Supreme Court – the way they really tortured him and his family I thought it was disgrace. I thought it was one of the most disgraceful performances I’ve ever seen.”

“He was a great person and it was very, very unfair what happened to him. False charges, false accusations, horrible statements that were totally untrue that he knew nothing about.”

And so on.

FBI Director Chris Wray said the White House imposed limits on the background investigation of Kavanaugh.

He explained that the limited scope was “consistent with the standard process for such investigations” as the FBI follows guidance from whoever orders the investigation and in this case it was Trump.

Wray’s comments contradict claims from the White House that it was the Senate Judiciary Committee who ordered the investigation.

The Democrats criticised the limited probe as a sham and part of the Republican’s plan to rush through Kavanaugh’s investigation.

Dr Christine Blasey Ford has been nominated for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Distinguished Alumna Award for “speaking truth to power” by speaking about her sexual assault by Brett Kavanaugh.

Dr Jennifer Ho wrote in her nomination letter: “What Dr Blasey Ford did on September 27 2018 was something that was extraordinary in how ordinary it was: she told the truth about a sexual assault she experienced when she was 15 years old at the hands of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Dr Blasey Ford giving her testimony, speaking truth to power was an inspiration for so many of us. Her accomplishment is to be an alumna of integrity, who despite great personal cost to herself and her family told her story of her sexual assault and emboldened others to also find the courage to speak out against injustice.”

Melania Trump said in an interview that “victims” who make allegations of sexual misconduct “need to have really hard evidence”.

She went on: “I support the women and they need to be heard. We need to support them and, you know, also men, not just women. I do stand with women, but we need to show the evidence. You cannot just say to somebody, ‘I was sexually assaulted’ or ‘you did that to me’ because sometimes the media goes too far, and the way they portray some stories it’s, it’s not correct, it’s not right.”

A judge in New York has dismissed one of the six sexual assault charges against Harvey Weinstein.

Prosecutors said actress Lucia Evans has given a different account of being forced to perform oral sex to the prosecutors than she did to a witness.

Five charges remain.
