Trump
Last week Trump questioned the authenticity of the Access Hollywood tape in which he made his infamous “grab them by the pussy” comments.

This week Billy Bush has written an op ed column in The New York Times:

“He said it. ‘Grab ’em by the pussy.’

Of course he said it. And we laughed along, without a single doubt that this was hypothetical hot air from America’s highest-rated bloviator. Along with Donald Trump and me, there were seven other guys present on the bus at the time, and every single one of us assumed we were listening to a crass standup act. He was performing. Surely, we thought, none of this was real.

We now know better.”

Bush’s message to the women who bravely came forward to tell their stories of being sexually assaulted by Trump, only for him to accuse them of lying is this:

“I will never know the fear you felt or the frustration of being summarily dismissed and called a liar…You have my respect and admiration. You are culture warriors at the forefront of necessary change.”

Moore
The Republican National Committee renewed its support for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, hours after Trump formally endorsed him.

The RNC had withdrawn its support in November after seven women alleged that Moore had sexually harassed and assaulted them as teenagers.

The youngest was only fourteen.

However Moore denies the allegations – describing them as a “witch hunt” – and Trump said he believes him.

Trump tweeted: “We need Roy Moore to win in Alabama.”

The RNC’s decision allowed Moore’s campaign to access so-called get-out-the-vote funds.

Although Trump and the RNC support Moore the National Republican Senatorial Committee said it has not changed its stance, is staying out of the race and the chairman remains committed to this position.

Conyers
Michigan lawmaker John Conyers has said he will retire from the House of Representatives.

In November he admitted to settling a wrongful dismissal complaint back in 2015 with a former employee who claims he sexually harassed her.

Since then more women have accused him of sexual misconduct but he denies any wrongdoing.

Both Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan have been calling for him to resign.

Franken
Senator Al Franken has said he will resign “in the coming weeks”.

Nearly thirty democrats have called for him to do so in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Franken said it was ironic that he had to resign but Trump was still in the White House and Moore was campaigning for Senate with the full support of his party.

Nassar
Former Team USA olympics gymnastics sports doctor Larry Nassar has been sentenced to 60 years in jail for three counts of having images of child pornography and child sexual abuse on his computer.

He agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors and was given 20 years for each count.

Investigators said they found more than 37,000 images on his computer.

Nassar also faces two criminal cases of sexually assaulting female gymnasts and will be sentenced for that in January.

More than 130 women have filed civil lawsuits against him alleging abuse.

Franks
Arizona Republican Trent Franks has resigned amid an ethics investigation into claims he repeatedly asked female staff to be surrogate mothers.

The announcement came after a congressional panel said it was opening the inquiry into sexual harassment allegations against Franks.

TIME Person of the Year
I’ve saved the best news for last on today’s post.

I’m sure everybody knows already, but I absolutely can’t not mention that Time Magazine named “the Silence Breakers” – women (and men) who spoke out about sexual harassment and sexual assault – as Person of the Year.

This movement is most closely associated with #metoo but Time says the hashtag is “part of the picture, but not all of it”.

Editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal added: “it began with individual acts of courage by hundreds of women – and some men, too – who came forward to tell their own stories.”

Collectively these amazing souls have helped turn shame into outrage and fear into fury, put thousands of people on the streets demanding change, and seen many powerful men held accountable for their behaviour.

It is beyond awesome that they – we – have received this recognition.
