Al Franken
Senator Al Franken has admitted to feeling both embarrassed and ashamed after several women alleged him of touching them inappropriately.

Stephanie Kemplin, a US army veteran, is the fifth woman to speak out.

She describes what happened to her in Kuwait in 2003 when she had her photo taken with Franken: “I was in a war zone. When he put his arm around me, he groped my right breast. He kept his hand all the way over on my breast. And I remember thinking – is he going to move his hand? Was it an accident? Was he going to move his hand? He never moved his hand. It was long enough that he should have known if it was an accident. I’m very confident saying that.”

Stephanie said that she was left feeling frozen.

Franken claims not to remember these encounters, saying “it’s not something I would intentionally do” but says he will cooperate fully with the Ethics Commitee’s investigation.

Pentagon
The Pentagon has announced an increase in reports of misconduct against senior officials.

Allegations include improper relationships, improper personnel actions, sexual assault, misuse of government resources and travel violations.

It is likely that the increase in reporting is because people feel more able to speak out about their experiences.

Nancy Pelosi
Nancy Pelosi refused to criticise John Conyers after former Capitol Hill staff accused him of sexual harassment: “John Conyers is an icon in our country. He’s done a great deal to protect women,” citing his support for the Violence Against Women Act.

Although he initially refused to resign over this, he made the decision to step down from the House Judiciary Committee not long afterwards.

Conyers faces a House Ethics Committee investigation.

He “expressly and vehemently” denies the allegations.

Trump
Trump has questioned the authenticity of the Access Hollywood tape in which he made his infamous “grab them by the pussy” comments, even though he apologised immediately when it surfaced in 2016.

The New York Times said Trump had suggested the tape wasn’t authentic earlier this year and he repeated the claim more recently.

These denials contradict the apology he made last year: “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologise.”

Weinstein
The first UK civil claim against Harvey Weinstein has been issued by the High Court.

A woman, who worked in the film industry and has chosen to stay anonymous, alleged that Weinstein sexually assaulted her a number of times.

The claim is expected to exceed £300,000 ($405,000).

She is seeking damages for personal injury, expenses and consequential loss.

Her lawyer expects this civil claim to run at the same time as the criminal case.

Matt Lauer
NBC’s Matt Lauer has been fired over an allegation of sexual misconduct: “on Monday night we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace by Matt Lauer. As a result we’ve decided to terminate his employment…there is reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”

It was later reported that Lauer had been accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault by a number of women who said he had exposed himself to them and invited them to his hotel room.

He had a button installed underneath his desk which allowed him to lock his office door without getting up making it possible for him to prevent women leaving.

There are also claims he had a collection of sex toys in his office.

The most horrific allegation is that he raped a woman to the point where she lost consciousness and needed to be seen by a medical professional.

Lauer said in a statement: “to the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry…some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterised, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed.”

 Garrison Keillor
US author and radio host Garrison Keillor has been fired from Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) over an allegation of touching a colleague inappropriately.

Keillor said the incident of him touching his colleague’s bare back happened because he was trying to console her: “I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness, and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches. She recoiled. I apologised.”

MPR radio said: “we believe this decision is the right thing to do and is necessary to continue to earn the trust of our audiences, employees and supporters of our public service.”

Keillor also wrote opinion columns in The Washington Post, recently writing that there was no need for Senator Al Franken to resign.

female immigrant detainees
Californian Congressman Mark DeSaulnier has called for an inquiry into claims that female immigrant detainees in the West County Detention Facility in Richmond are being held in a cell for 23 hours a day and denied access to a toilet, being told to use a plastic bag instead.

Nancy Mayer, from Mexico, wrote this in a letter: “when we are on lockdown and a county inmate needs to use the restroom, she is unlocked so she can use it. When an ICE inmate asks, we are always told to either hold it or use a ‘red’ (bio hazard) bag.”

Russel Simmons
Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records, has stepped down from his companies following an allegation of rape by writer Jenny Lumet in 1991.

This is not the first allegation against Simmons.

In November, model Keri Claussen Kahlighi accused him of rape.

And Tanya Reid said that Simmons pressurised her to perform oral sex on Brett Ratner.
